If you’re writing fiction, this won’t necessarily apply to you as much. But if you’re writing any kind of nonfiction, it definitely. Even if you don’t have a business yet, if you’re an author, you’re an entrepreneur by definition. You have a product to sell. Your book is your product.
Before we dive into today’s topic, I want to share one of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned about productivity and time management. If you think you don’t have time to write a book, pay attention.

What do I want my book to do for me?
If you want to be seen as an expert, what kind of book can best help you do that?
Memoir
Professional memoir
How-to book
Subject-matter breakdown
What do I want my book to do for readers?
Entertain, enlighten, educate, encourage, inspire
What’s the primary goal?
To teach them how to do something?
To inspire and entertain?
What’s the best kind of book to do both?
Memoir
How-to
Subject matter breakdown
Hybrid
Your action step is to answer those three questions
What do I want my book to do for me?
What do I want my book to do for my readers?
What kind of book will do both?
Choose a genre for your book. And stick with it. You can always choose a different genre for your next book.
